The Car Has a Dead Battery, and I Do Not Care

A personal reflection on hermit mode, pet sitting in New Zealand, creative work, rest, and the quiet joy of staying exactly where I am.

Bear, one of the giant labs in my charge, dug up an enormous beef bone last week, buried there by Punga, the dog that owns the property. He would not let it go and ate so much of it that his poop changed color. I spent twenty minutes researching to make sure he wasn’t sick. He wasn’t, just very pleased with his two hours of bone gnawing.

This is the level at which my life is operating right now.

After months on the go across Asia, rainforests and beaches in Australia, and road-tripping around the South Island, I am fully and deliciously in hermit mode. I am pet sitting in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, with two black labs and a cat, in a comfortable house with a big yard, and the car my hosts left me has a dead battery.

I have an easy way around this, but I haven’t taken it.

There is nowhere I want to go that my feet won’t take me...

I’ve shared the rest of this reflection on Substack, including more about hermit mode, creative work, rest, and what I am building next.

You can continue reading it here.
